What this tool does

  • Bottom or top; left, centre or right
  • Plain numbers, or number and total
  • Any starting number, for documents that continue another one
  • Positioned correctly on rotated pages
  • Reads the file signature instead of trusting the file extension.
  • Copies real pages. Nothing is rasterized and no page is re-rendered.
  • Refuses encrypted PDFs instead of working around the protection.
  • Refuses digitally signed PDFs, because saving them again would break the signature.
  • Reports the measured size of the file your browser produced.

Questions about Add page numbers to PDF

My document starts with a cover. Can numbering start at 2?
You can set the first number to any value, for example 0 so the cover is page 0 and the next page is 1. Every page is numbered; the cover is not skipped.
Will the numbers cover my text?
They sit in the page margin, about two font-heights from the edge. On a page whose content runs to the very edge, they can overlap it, so check the first pages of the result.
Which font is used?
Helvetica, one of the standard fonts every PDF reader has built in, so nothing extra is embedded.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs inside your browser tab, so the file bytes are read and written on your own device and are never sent to us for processing. Closing the tab discards everything, which is also why results cannot be restored after a reload.
Do I need an account?
No. The free tools work without signing in. There is no account system yet, so nothing is stored between visits.
